LOGOLOG
a weblog of wordplay by Eric Harshbarger
-und
For some reason, adjectives ending in the letters "-und" but NOT "-ound" have always fascinated me. Maybe it's because they are not very common in the English language. "Rotund" is probably the most frequently heard (this is from personal experience, not some grammaro-scientifico-study), but there are several others. All of them seem to have some "quality" about themselves or their definitions which I can't quite put a finger on. They just all sound peculiar, and somewhat archaic.
My MW3 CDRom includes these adjectives:
- COGITABUND - pensive
- FACUND - eloquent
- FECUND - fertile (and the opposite is INFECUND)
- FURIBUND - frenzied
- IRACUND - irascible
- IMMUND - unclean
- JOCUND - cheerful (fairly common, I guess)
- MORIBUND - dormant
- OBTUND - dull
- OBROTUND - obround (ends in "-ound"!)
- OROTUND - resonant (also OBROTUND)
- PUDIBUND - prudish
- ROTUND - chubby
- RUBICUND - ruddy
- SECUND - unilateral
Have I missed any? How often do you actually hear or use any of these words? They all seem so interesting.

Comments about this article:
Most of them are actually pretty common in Spanish, but you are right, not so in English.
I was wondering, isn't MORIBUND more like "dying"?

Seriously? I don't know how you forgot "gerund". Best regards.
